Electric Bar: A Symphony of Heritage, Humour, and High Spirits

The Man The Myth The Legend
Matt Ambler

Nestled in the heart of Melbourne's bustling nightlife, Electric Bar stands as a testament to innovation, heritage, and the sheer joy of a well-crafted cocktail. I recently sat down with Matt Ambler from the Good Company Bar Group, one of the visionary minds behind this iconic venue. With a fondness for humour and a deep-seated passion for creating unforgettable experiences, Matt shares the journey of Electric Bar, painting a vivid picture of its inception, challenges, and the unique charm that makes it a cornerstone of Melbourne's nightlife.

A Gateway to Nightlife Wonders

"The staircase was a bit of a turn-off initially" Matt remarks about the grand staircase leading to Electric Bar's entrance. Once seen as a barrier, this architectural feature has been transformed into an enticing gateway to the wonders that await upstairs. "We kinda leaned into the mystery...allowing it to add to our exclusivity," Matt reveals, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

Designing Warmth and Elegance

"The interior design of Electric Bar, with its earthy tones and warm wood, was a deliberate choice aimed at creating an inviting atmosphere," Matt emphasises, underscoring the venue's commitment to making patrons feel at home. This design philosophy not only enhances the ambience but also pays homage to the venue's structural heritage. Here, Nick Young's influence was instrumental. "Originally the brand's colour was Lipstick red & colour mismatches, we wanted to change that but still show some connection to the existing brand; orange being next to red on the colour palette," Matt reflects, highlighting the collaborative vision that led to the venue's warm and inviting atmosphere.

Refurbishing with the Five Senses in Mind

"The original refurbishment was carefully considered and meticulously delivered," Matt highlights, pointing out the collaboration with top branding and architectural design experts in Melbourne. To achieve intimacy and amiability, the team focused on engaging all five senses, creating a cohesive experience that envelops patrons the moment they step inside.

The Weekend Vibe: Open and Energetic

"Open? Yeah, we're always open... haha," when asked about the weekend vibe at Electric Bar. The Music Director, Rob Anthony, is credited for curating a music and entertainment lineup that enhances the venue's open and energetic atmosphere. "We always opened the doors to local talent," Matt emphasises, underlining the importance of supporting Melbourne's own. The addition of flair and fire elements further amplifies the energy, making every night at Electric Bar an unforgettable experience.

Catering to Diverse Needs

"Thankfully through the bones of the building and the 7 am-3 am liquor licence, we have the ability to be open at the majority of times suitable for many different types of events and functions," detailing the flexibility that allows Electric Bar to adapt to the diverse needs of its patrons seamlessly.

Signature Events and Themed Nights

"Our top 3 would have to be: our collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier with the likes of Dua Lipa on the guest list, to 'Only 300' parties with an epic international DJ such as Deborah De Luca, MoodyMann, or Sven Vath playing in the full boiler room/house party set up to huge collaborations with Red Bull hosting their F1 afterparty," highlighting Electric Bar's forte in hosting top-tier parties.

Overcoming Challenges: From Cocktail Club to Lively Weekend Destination

"Our challenge now is activating the space before the full house, wall-to-wall party most nights of the week," Matt addresses the efforts to remove the 'weekend, busy, impossible to get in' stigma. He's confident in the venue's transformation during winter, creating "a warm and open space for people to come wind down and enjoy Electric's many layers."

A Distinctive Architectural and Design Narrative

"A good friend of Electric's, the late Ben Harrison once summarised the venue's look as '70s chic, ski-loft boutique' which is absolutely genius, just as he was," highlighting how this theme has influenced the storytelling and thematic experience conveyed to guests.

Behind-the-Scenes: Crafting the Ultimate Cocktail Experience

"Our first cocktail menu featured caricatures of all the core staff in this weird chaotic setting, that was fun," giving insight into the creativity and collaboration behind curating Electric Bar's cocktail menu. "But it was bouncing off Michael Forbes that allowed us to create some magic in our original menus, we truly complement each other."

Emphasising the Staff-Patron Connection

"It's all about the staff, and how they interact with the patrons; always has been," Matt emphasises the connection with the patrons as a key to Electric Bar's success. This philosophy of aiming to make every patron feel welcomed, comfortable, and at home is what sets Electric Bar apart.

Looking Forward

"We'll keep doing what we're doing," about the future, emphasising the continuous effort to evolve Electric Bar while maintaining its status as an institution in Melbourne's nightlife. "Focus on culture, not spreadsheets, which is a personal opinion of mine," he laughs, capturing the essence of Electric Bar’s original approach and the reason for its dramatic climb in popularity.

Electric Bar's success is not just in its ability to host unforgettable nights but also in its role as a community hub where people from all walks of life can come together to celebrate, relax, and enjoy the art of mixology in a setting that feels both exclusive and welcoming. As Electric Bar looks to the future, it remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what a nightlife venue can be, ensuring that it will continue to be a beacon of innovation and enjoyment in Melbourne's vibrant nightlife scene for years to come.
