"I can remember looking at old black and white photos when I’d visit my grandparents as a kid. I’d find them fascinating and would imagine what was happening in that moment it was taken,". Daniel's casual interest in photography took a profound turn in 2021 when he was diagnosed with cancer. This pivotal moment brought a new perspective on life and art. "The diagnosis affected my outlook on things and life in general,". "So the idea of being able to capture moments and the everyday mundane grew on me. It quickly became a bit of an obsession and a stress reliever."
During his recovery, Daniel found solace in his camera. The act of photographing everyday scenes provided a therapeutic escape, allowing him to focus on the beauty around him rather than his illness. "Photography had a greater purpose, but it also allowed me to switch off, slow down, and see things in a new light," he reflects. His passion for
capturing life through the lens became a driving force in his recovery, helping him stay positive and engaged.
Now cancer-free, Daniel looks back on this period as a transformative chapter in his life. "It showed me that these things can creep up at any time. We’re more vulnerable than we might think. I felt as though it dramatically increased my self-awareness and my awareness of my surroundings,". This heightened awareness and appreciation for life deeply influenced his photography, and inspired his work with a profound sense of purpose and authenticity.
Evolving Style and Focus
Initially, Daniel's photography focused on Melbourne's architecture, trams, and striking urban landscapes. Over time, his work evolved to capture the essence of everyday life and the people within it. "I still enjoy taking photographs of beautiful architecture, but I could take the same photograph multiple times, and it won’t necessarily look any different. Capturing people and everyday life will always be different because you’re capturing a moment that may never be repeated,".
Daniel emphasises the importance of storytelling in his work, finding purpose and challenge in depicting real-life narratives. "It’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time while successfully capturing it. I find that it makes the viewer look deeply at the photograph rather than quickly skimming over it. It can be something very simple, but includes an interesting subject and/or composition,".

Melbourne plays a significant role in Daniel's photography, providing a vibrant and diverse backdrop for his work. "Melbourne has so much potential. Cities like New York and Tokyo dominate the street photography scene on social media. I like to try and show Melbourne off in the best way I can. Melbourne has a culture unlike anywhere else in Australia. I try to capture that in my photography,".
The city’s eclectic mix of old and new, from Victorian-era buildings to contemporary architecture, offers a rich tapestry of subjects. "This contrast provides endless opportunities for unique compositions,". He often finds himself wandering the streets, capturing the city’s essence through its structures, people, and moments of everyday life.
Melbourne's dynamic street life also plays a crucial role in his work. "The city is always buzzing with activity, from its bustling markets to its quiet laneways. There's always something happening, and I try to capture the energy and vibe of the city in my photographs,". This includes everything from street performers and local artists to everyday commuters and market vendors, each contributing to the city’s unique character.
The city's diverse cultural landscape further enriches Daniel's photography. "I love capturing the multicultural essence of Melbourne. Whether it's a local festival or just people from different walks of life interacting, there's a story in every frame,".
Balancing Passions and Responsibilities
Daniel's life is a balancing act of various responsibilities and passions. Alongside his photography, he helps run a martial arts club and is pursuing a Master's degree part-time. "The days aren’t long enough. There are always compromises, but never with raising a young family. All those things take a backseat when it comes to my family. That’s my biggest challenge,". "I study my degree part-time and now only teach at my Martial Arts club once a fortnight. I take my camera with me to most places, especially when I travel to and from the city. So often when I walk to the train station, I can fit in some photography."
Staying Motivated and Overcoming Challenges
Staying motivated and maintaining a fresh perspective in photography is crucial for Daniel. "By always looking for ways to improve, both in how I use my camera and how I edit my images,". He also finds inspiration in the work of other photographers but cautions that it can be a double-edged sword, potentially causing doubt in his work. "It’s a matter of balancing it out,".
Daniel handles creative blocks by exploring new subjects and themes. "Pretty much anything that creates a bit of an atmosphere and mood. I love taking the camera out in heavy rain and also at times when the afternoon light hits right,". Items like umbrellas and retro-style hats grab his attention, telling more of a story.
Technical Growth and Future Plans
Since starting his photography journey, Daniel has developed numerous technical skills. "Using the camera completely in manual mode has forced me to learn the appropriate aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in all types of lighting and scenarios. It has allowed me to focus more on what I’m capturing rather than camera settings,".
Looking ahead, Daniel is excited about his future projects. "I’ve started recording POV videos when I’m shooting, and I’m excited to do more of those and build up a YouTube channel. I’d also love to release a book one day,".

"Taking a family shot while trying to keep a toddler still, and trying to work the camera from a tripod all at the same time is as crazy as it sounds,". "Being invited along for that felt like a welcoming into the Melbourne photography scene,".

For those just starting in photography, Daniel offers valuable advice. "Don’t spend too much on photography gear because it won’t make your photographs better. If you’re going to invest money, buy an interchangeable lens camera and invest in lenses. Get to know your camera and its limits,". "Lastly, become comfortable with the fact that not everyone will like your photographs. Like art, it is subjective and it doesn’t mean it’s bad. So don’t overthink it."

Daniel values engaging with his audience on social media and learning from their feedback. "I do my best to respond to comments and messages, while also checking out the work of others and giving my thoughts. It tends to become quite reciprocal. I’m always learning and improving, so I welcome any criticism,". Positive feedback, such as people wanting to purchase his photographs as prints, has been particularly rewarding.
